Do you want to specialize, or practice general dentistry?

Self-knowledge and honesty. Some schools are also quietly assessing fit with their program's strengths.

The trap

Dismissing general dentistry as a fallback. Most of the faculty in the room are general dentists, and the field's identity is built on it.

How to structure your answer

Your honest current leaning → what's driving it → what would change your mind.

A weak answer

What most people say
I'm leaning toward orthodontics. I've been drawn to it for a while and I like the focused scope and the patient population you work with. That said, I'm keeping an open mind through school, and if it doesn't work out I'd be perfectly happy practicing general dentistry.

Makes general dentistry the consolation prize, in a room of general dentists.

A stronger answer

What lands
I'm leaning ortho, and I should say why, so it doesn't sound like a default. I coordinated treatment at an orthodontic office for four years and I watched thirteen-year-olds change how they carried themselves over eighteen months. But the person I learned the most from there was the general dentist next door, who handled everything nobody had scheduled for. What would change my mind is a good restorative rotation. I've never had one. I'd be suspicious of myself if I were certain right now.

Grounded leaning, genuine respect for general, and a named condition for changing.

The first answer ranks the two. The second says what would have to happen for her to turn out wrong.

These are illustrations, not scripts. An answer you memorize sounds memorized — the point is the shape and the specificity, in your own words and about your own life.

Reading it isn't the same as saying it.

Most people can explain a good answer and still fall apart saying one out loud. Admitted asks you all 100 questions in a faculty voice, records you, and scores your pace and filler words.
