How's your morning going so far? Did you manage to get coffee?
Basic human ease. They want to see whether you can be a normal person under mild pressure.
The trap
Over-answering. This is a five-second question and some applicants deliver a paragraph because they've rehearsed being impressive and can't turn it off.
How to structure your answer
Honest, light answer → one small human detail → open it back up.
- Be honest — nerves are allowed and admitting them lightly is charming
- Keep it warm and brief
- Don't perform enthusiasm you don't feel
A weak answer
It's going really well, thank you. I got here early enough to have a coffee in the lobby and go over my notes one more time. Honestly, I've been looking forward to today for months. I've read a lot about the program and thought hard about what I want to ask, so I feel ready.
A five-second question answered with a pitch; the ease never arrives.
A stronger answer
It's going well. I got coffee, and then a second coffee, which was probably a mistake. My daughter is three and she woke up at five to tell me she had an interview today too, so I've been up a while. I'm a little nervous, but the good kind. How's your morning going? How many of us have you talked to already?
Admits the nerves lightly, offers one human image, hands it back.
The first answer is still auditioning. The second sounds like someone you'd want next to you at seven in the morning.
These are illustrations, not scripts. An answer you memorize sounds memorized — the point is the shape and the specificity, in your own words and about your own life.
Reading it isn't the same as saying it.
Most people can explain a good answer and still fall apart saying one out loud. Admitted asks you all 100 questions in a faculty voice, records you, and scores your pace and filler words.
