What lands

The patient was actually my grandmother. My grandmother had a denture for years that never fit right. We took her to a new dentist, who spent a lot of time marking, grinding, and adding to the denture. Afterwards, it fit so much better. My grandmother ate a sandwich at lunch that day, instead of the usual pureed food. She was so happy.

An unglamorous appointment, one specific person, and the reaction is the point.

A weak answer

What most people say

The most rewarding thing I saw was a full-mouth reconstruction. The patient came in with a lot of damage and after several long appointments the transformation was incredible. Seeing the before and after photos side by side really showed me how much of an impact dentistry can have on someone's confidence and quality of life.

The trap

⚠Choosing the flashiest procedure. A full-mouth rehab is impressive; a dentist spending twenty minutes getting a terrified patient to sit down is more revealing about what you value.

Reading it isn't the same as saying it.
