Why dentistry and not medicine?
Whether you chose dentistry actively or landed there by elimination. They can tell the difference instantly.
The trap
'Better lifestyle' or 'better hours' as your lead reason. It may be part of the truth, but leading with it tells them you're optimizing rather than committed. Equally bad: implying dentistry is medicine's easier cousin.
How to structure your answer
Affirm respect for medicine → name the specific structural differences that drew you → tie to something you observed firsthand.
- Speak positively about dentistry rather than negatively about medicine
- Name real distinctions: immediate visible outcomes, procedure-based care, long-term patient relationships, practice autonomy
- Ground it in shadowing you actually did in both, if you did
A weak answer
I have a lot of respect for medicine, but dentistry is a better fit for the kind of life I want to build. The hours are more predictable, and I like the idea of running my own practice one day rather than working inside a big hospital system. The patient relationships seem better too, since you see people regularly.
Leads with the schedule, which reads as optimizing rather than choosing.
A stronger answer
I've been an EMT for two years, which means I spend my life handing people off. I take somebody to the hospital and I never find out what happened to them. Then I shadowed a general dentist outside Waco and watched him seat a crown he'd prepped three weeks earlier, on a man whose two kids he also treats. Start to finish, his hands, his name on it. I respect medicine. I just don't want to keep handing people off.
Chooses dentistry for what it has, not for what medicine lacks.
The first answer compares two careers. The second names the exact thing he kept missing at work.
These are illustrations, not scripts. An answer you memorize sounds memorized — the point is the shape and the specificity, in your own words and about your own life.
Reading it isn't the same as saying it.
