What lands

I took the epidemiology master's because I wanted to know why two counties an hour apart had such different health outcomes, and I still care about that. Then I spent two years on a state oral health survey. Through the survey, I learned about lack of patient understanding when it came to dental hygiene. I became motivated to change that. Patient education is one of the things I am most excited in my future career as a dentist.

Honours the earlier path, names what was missing from it, and carries the work forward into dentistry.

A weak answer

What most people say

I finished a master's in epidemiology and then worked as a data analyst for two years. It was fine, but I realized fairly quickly that sitting in front of a spreadsheet all day wasn't for me. I wanted to work with people and actually see the result of what I do, so I decided to apply to dental school.

"Wasn't for me" frames the master's as a dead end and dentistry as an escape.

The trap

Reading it isn't the same as saying it.
