The trap

How to structure your answer
STAR — Situation, Task, Action, Result. Weight it toward Action.
- Set the scene in two sentences maximum
- Spend most of the answer on what you specifically did
- Name a concrete result
- Close with what you'd carry into dental school
A weak answer
The biggest challenge I've faced was moving here from Colombia when I was fifteen. I didn't speak much English, we moved in with my aunt, and I started tenth grade in a school where I didn't know a single person. My mother was working two jobs the whole time. It was a really hard couple of years, but I got through it and I think it made me stronger.
All setup and no action. The part that gets scored never arrives.
A stronger answer
When I was seventeen my mom's cleaning company stopped paying her for six weeks and she wasn't going to do anything about it. I read English best in our house, so it came to me. I found the state labor board's complaint form, put her pay stubs in a folder in date order, called the office three separate times because the first two calls went nowhere, and sat next to her at the hearing translating. She got about four weeks of it back. What I really took from it is that you keep calling after the second no.
Most of the answer is action: the form, the folder, the third call, the hearing.
The first answer describes weather. The second describes a person doing things, which is the only part anyone is scoring.
These are illustrations, not scripts. An answer you memorize sounds memorized — the point is the shape and the specificity, in your own words and about your own life.
Reading it isn't the same as saying it.
Most people can explain a good answer and still fall apart saying one out loud. Admitted asks you all 100 questions in a faculty voice, records you, and scores your pace and filler words.
