STAR — Situation, Task, Action, Result. Weight it toward Action.
- Set the scene in two sentences maximum
- Spend most of the answer on what you specifically did
- Name a concrete result
- Close with what you'd carry into dental school
A strong answer
What lands
When I was seventeen, my mom’s cleaning company stopped paying her for six weeks, and she wasn’t sure what to do. Since I was the strongest English reader in our household, I took the lead.
I found the state labor board’s complaint form, organized her pay stubs, and called the office three times because the first two calls got us nowhere. I also went with her to the hearing and helped translate. In the end, she recovered about four weeks of unpaid wages.
That experience taught me that persistence means more than just working hard. It means finding another way forward when your first attempt doesn’t work. I’ll bring that same mindset to dental school, especially in sim lab, where I know developing my clinical skills will take patience, repetition, and a willingness to keep improving.
Most of the answer is action: the form, the folder, the third call, the hearing.
A weak answer
What most people say
The biggest challenge I've faced was moving here from Colombia when I was fifteen. I didn't speak much English, we moved in with my aunt, and I started tenth grade in a school where I didn't know a single person. My mother was working two jobs the whole time. It was a really hard couple of years, but I got through it and I think it made me stronger.
